Frequently Asked Questions
Over the years, prospective customers have asked us many questions related to our boats and our approach to building them. The following is a list of those asked most frequently. In addition, we have provided this FAQ in PDF format and it can be downloaded here.
What is the draft of your boats?
The draft of our boats is governed by the size of propeller appropriate for your engine choice and by the dimensional proportions required to maintain the integrity of our unique style. In general, the following would apply:
- Modern Beta 43 engined boats - 24"
- Engine room with Beta Tug engine - 27"
- Engine room with vintage engine - 30"
What length boats do you build?
Our minimum is 50 feet
Our maximum is 72 feet
What styles of boat do you build?
We only build traditional style narrowboats, either with a modern engine at the stern or with an engine room and boatman's cabin
Do you sell just steelwork?
We do not sell bare shells, but we are happy to sell a basic, partly-fitted boat similar to those detailed in our specifications page
What about:
- Tug deck vs well deck?
- Windows vs portholes?
- Modern engine vs engine room and boatman's cabin?
- Walk-through bathroom vs enclosed bathroom?
These are personal preferences and we are very happy to discuss their merits relative to your requirements
When do we pay?
The only payment we ask for in advance is a deposit of £500 on placement of order. After that you pay after work is completed to various stages. Usually five or six staged payments are involved dependant on cost/specification.
Why do you have long swims?
Long swims make the boat more responsive and generally give better handling
Can we have our own design inside?
Yes, as long as it is physically possible and practical to implement your requirements.
Do we get a Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) certificate?
Yes. Providing an RCD on all new boats is now a legal requirement for all boatbuilders. In addition, we provide a BWB Boat Safety Certificate (BSC). Both the RCD and the BSC are provided by an independent surveyor.
What is your most popular size?
62ft. This is a good compromise between accommodation the amount of waterways which can be cruised.
